The future of computing lies in these things. As computing takes a much more active role in our lives it will at the same time become much more invisible. Internet of Things Expo will address the challenges in getting from where we are today to this future.

The high-energy event is a must-attend for senior technologists from CEOs on down – including CIOs, CTOs, directors of infrastructure, VPs of technology, IT directors and managers, network and storage managers, network engineers, enterprise architects, and communications and networking specialists.

@ThingsExpo Power Panel | The World's Many IoTs: Which Are the Most Important?
The Internet of Things is clearly many things: data collection and analytics, wearables, Smart Grids and Smart Cities, the Industrial Internet, and more. Cool platforms like Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Intel's Galileo and Edison, and a diverse world of sensors are making the IoT a great toy box for developers in all these areas. In this Power Panel at @ThingsExpo, panelists discussed what things are the most important, which will have the most profound effect on the world, and what should we expect to see over the next couple of years.
Benefits of Attending the Three-Day Technical Program
LEARNexactly why Internet of Things is relevant today from an economic, business and technology standpoint.
HEAR first-hand from industry experts the common issues and requirements for creating a platform for the Internet of Things.
SEE what new tools and approaches the Internet of Things requires.
DISCOVER how to drive a distributed approach to the Internet of Things, where applications move to the data.
FIND OUThow the vast volumes of new data produced by the Internet of Things provides a valuable new source of business insight through advanced analytical techniques.
MASTER how the ongoing development of smart cities, cars, and houses will enhance connectivity infrastructure.
Lunch Power Panel | Microservices & IoT- Moderated by Jason Bloomberg
In this Power Panel at @DevOpsSummit, moderated by Jason Bloomberg, president of Intellyx, panelists Roberto Medrano, Executive Vice President at Akana; Lori MacVittie, Evangelist for F5 Networks; and Troy Topnik, ActiveState's Technical Product Manager; and Otis Gospodnetic, founder of Sematext; peeled away the buzz and discuss the important architectural principles behind implementing IoT solutions for the enterprise. As remote IoT devices and sensors become increasingly intelligent, they become part of our distributed cloud environment, and we must architect and code accordingly. At the very least, you'll have no problem filling in your buzzword bingo cards.

New IBM Technologies Improve Speed, Performance for Web Services
New IBM Technologies Improve Speed, Performance for Web Services

IBM has just released two new technologies on its alphaWorks site (www.ibm.com/alphaworks) - the IBM Business Process Execution Language for Web Services Java Runtime (BPWS4J), and an updated version of the Web Services Toolkit (WSTK) for dynamic e-business, version 3.2. BPWS4J provides an execution engine and an editor for the recently announced Business Process Execution Language for Web Services (BPEL4WS). The updated WSTK includes sample demos of BPEL4WS, as well as of the Web Services Transaction (WS-TX) and Web Services Coordination (WS-C) specifications.

BPWS4J is an implementation of BPEL4WS, a language that allows companies to describe business processes that include multiple Web services and standardize message exchange. BPWS4J provides a platform upon which BPEL4WS-defined business processes can execute, and a set of samples that demonstrate the use of BPEL4WS, as well as a tool that performs validation of BPEL4WS documents.

BPWS4J also comes with an Eclipse plug-in that aids in the creation of BPEL4WS processes. The BPEL4WS Eclipse Plug-in is a simple editor for creating and modifying BPEL4WS files. A developer using the BPEL4WS Eclipse plug-in can easily represent a company's business process as a simple composition of Web service interactions. It can be installed in the standard Eclipse framework, allowing developers to take advantage of Eclipse's open development environment when creating BPEL4WS documents. BPWS4J runs on IBM's WebSphere Application Server and Apache Tomcat 4.01.

The Web Services Toolkit (WSTK 3.2) consolidates Web services-related technologies from various IBM development and research labs and provides an implementation based on non-proprietary interfaces that supports a variety of platforms. New features and functions in the WSTK include:

  • BPEL4WS, WS-Transaction, and WS-Coordination demo: Allows customers to see the Web services interactions between various participants during a business transaction. The demo showcases a real-world transaction model, based on a travel agency application. In the demo, customers can schedule a trip based on a set itinerary: making flight reservations, booking a hotel room, reserving a car. It automatically procures the airline, hotel and vehicle reservations by following a defined business flow. The reservation information is then returned to the customer, along with a trip code that allows for cancellations and compensations.

  • Web Services Matchmaking Engine (WSME) demo: Provides a rich and flexible search capability to allow both the Web services provider and the Web services requestor to specify their preferences and demands. For example, a service provider might want to make the availability of a Web service - such as a travel reservation application - conditional upon the characteristics of the service requestor. If a service requester is a licensed travel agent, service availability is granted. Data used in the query can be dynamically obtained or calculated at run-time to provide a far more accurate search.

  • Service Level Agreement (SLA)-based management system for Web services: SLAs specify performance guarantees associated with Web services operations and business processes - such as response times and service availability - that are essential for business critical operations. Service providers can use SLAs to advertise and create service level agreements with customers. This helps them to provision the appropriate amount of resources and prioritize the servicing of customer requests. For example, a customer can agree to a WSLA that guarantees 50 orders can be processed per second. However, anything over 50 orders will not have a guaranteed response time. The SLA-based management system uses two key technologies: Web Service Level Agreements (WSLA), a system that provides SLA definitions and compliance monitoring, and Web Services Management Middleware (WSMM), a system that provides run-time control mechanisms to support guaranteed performance.

  • Updated Web Services Security (WS-Security) specification implementation: Enhanced to provide more complete support for WS-Security. Includes a WS-Security compliant encryption demo, support for binary security tokens, and a demonstration of combined digital signature and encryption.

  • Direct Internet Message Encapsulation (DIME) demo: DIME is a format for sending multipart messages. Its main purpose is to provide a way to package a SOAP message with one or more attachments. SOAP is an XML-based industry protocol for accessing Web services in a platform- and language-independent manner. This demo illustrates the use of SOAP attachments in both remote procedure call (RPC) and document messaging styles of SOAP interaction. The DIME specification - co-developed by IBM and Microsoft - was recently submitted to the IETF organization.

Continuing IBM's commitment to open standards and cross-platform interoperability, the WSTK functions are based on open specifications such as SOAP, WSDL, WS-Inspection, and UDDI, and it runs on Linux, Windows XP, and Windows 2000 operating systems.

BPWS4J and the WSTK v3.2.1 are now available for free trial download on alphaWorks.
